Kedai Makanan Ban Lee is a straightforward Chinese restaurant nestled on Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, known primarily for its Bak Kut Teh — a comforting, herbal pork rib soup beloved in Kuala Lumpur. The restaurant occupies a simple space comprising two shoplots with an open-concept setup, giving it an unpretentious, no-frills atmosphere that locals appreciate for a casual, hearty meal rather than a formal dining experience.

Visitors come here mainly for the traditional Teochew-style Bak Kut Teh, which is noted for its rich, dark broth flavored with a gentle but pronounced herbal blend. The soup strikes a balance—not overpowering, but layered with comforting notes that suit those who prefer a milder spice level. The pork ribs and other cuts are slow-cooked until tender, making it a satisfying choice for fans of classic Malaysian-Chinese home cooking.

Alongside the signature Bak Kut Teh, the menu offers familiar sides like fried dough sticks (油条 or Yau Char Kueh), which are fresh and crisp, perfect for dipping into the soup to soak up the flavors. Vegetables and other herbal-infused dishes add variety, catering to those who want something lighter or more textured to accompany the broth.

Parking can be a challenge here, especially during peak meal times, as the restaurant is popular with longtime regulars and those passing through the area. Lunchtimes tend to be quieter, allowing for quicker seating and a more relaxed meal; evenings can be livelier but maintain a down-to-earth vibe suited for casual group dining or solo visits.

Those who appreciate traditional Malaysian Chinese comfort food will find Kedai Makanan Ban Lee’s atmosphere familiar and inviting. The service is straightforward and efficient, reinforcing the focus on food over frills. It's an ideal spot if you’re local or nearby and looking for a reliably good Bak Kut Teh without pretense or fuss.

It's been years since I last visited. Simple two shoplots with open concept. Only problem is finding a car park. Bah kut teh and vinegar pork trotters were delicious. Taste remained the same. The meat was soft and tender. Soup was rich and flavourful. One of the best in town. There are optional side dishes. Service was good.

I believe this Bak Kut Teh restaurant has been around for at least 3 decades.(next to Dynasty Hotel, opposite Wisma Chua Song Seng, Jln Ipoh) It remains one of my favorite BKT spots in Kuala Lumpur, known for its dark, rich broth with a strong and comforting herbal flavor.

We came here for lunch at the recommendation from a colleague. Along with most of their customers, we parked right outside the restaurant. It wasn't too crowded, and we got a table instantly. The bak kut teh was good. It was flavourful but wasn't too heavily aromatic. The pork was cooked just long enough for the meat to be tender. We had some other side dishes, such as claypot pork shoulders and stir fried vegetables. It was a pleasant but heavy lunch for a workday.

The soup spice is not too strong, just mild but good... If you are around the corner, just try this bakut teh

The BKT here is the Teochew style with strong herbal taste. In the Claypot with vegetables, mushrooms and tofu skins, the herbal taste is less pronounced and more balanced. This is Recommended. The Braised Pork Leg had a nice taste but need a little more cooking. This was lunch time, so the pork leg would be just nice for dinner. The Yau Cha Kue was fresh and crispy. Best to dunk in the BKT soup.

The tastes and quality of food fit the description of the golden words on the red plate very well.

Have been coming to Ban Lee for over 16 years. The bak kut teh here is consistently good, both soup and dry versions are tasty and not too salty. Not the best in town but definitely above average. Parking can be tough, might kena saman if you park at the road side, better use the carpark behind.
